Impressive Sound Quality
on December 31, 2013
I am a diehard JBL speaker fan. I currently have the JBL Northridge series on my system. These speakers have been working flawlessly for the past 7 years so naturally I wanted to add matching speakers. Unfortunately, the Northridge Series are no longer available.
I needed a pair of speakers to fill dead space on the other side of a large living room in my new home however I did not want another pair or towers. I researched the L810 and felt that they would be great for my purpose (cover the dead space).
Upon arrival, my first thought was "how big" the box was that packaged the pair of L810's. After opening the box my first impression was that "these are huge wall mountable speakers" and quite heavy. My idea was to mount them on the wall but I was now having second thoughts given how large and heavy they were.
I mounted the pair on the wall (using anchors) and wired them up to my amplifier receiver. As stated in other reviews, these are very, very attractive speakers. I could not stop admiring them once they were both mounted on both sides of the wall in the living room. I tuned them up, dialed in the volume to match my towers and cranked up the music. I was absolutely blown away at how crisp and clear they sounded at high volume and how well the sound dispersed to cover the dead space. There was no distortion whatsoever (I tested with different musical genre's but primarily reggae for the hard thumping bass.) I turned down the volume and focused in on vocals and highs. I remained impressed with how clean and crisp the sounds came through.
I bought a second pair and hooked those up in another room on the same amp (Zone 2). I was again thoroughly impressed with the quality of sound emanating from these speakers but noticed that bass was significantly diminished when used by themselves. In short, these speakers were not designed to reproduce low bass frequencies so I would recommend complimenting them with a subwoofer.
The L810's are very sturdy indeed and solidly built (hence the weight) the build quality is most impressive even though it clearly states on the packaging that the speakers were made/assembled in Mexico (stereotyped for producing less than stellar quality products.)
The bad: The connectors in the back protrude beyond the back of the speaker itself. This makes it impossible for the speaker(s) to sit flush against the wall if mounted, or the use of banana clips if desired. When the speakers where taken down during installation, the connectors had done a good job of scratching up the wall underneath. This was reason enough for me to deduct a point.
All in all I am most impressed with this purchase and given my experience with JBL products over the years, I am confident that these speakers will weather the test of time and stand up to the abuse I put them through quite well.
I highly recommended this product without hesitation or reservation but caution that if you are looking for speakers that are able to reproduce low bass frequencies, either look elsewhere or be prepared to purchase a subwoofer as well.
