Dope beats, but sub par lyrics. Over all, I'll give it 3 stars out of 5. Honestly, it seems like his flows have changed a little bit since Livin' Proof, but the difference is that the beats were so dope on Livin Proof, that the sub par lyrics could be given a pass. I find the lyrics are more noticable on this album, and it gets tiresome at times, so I'd have to be in the mood for this to spin it again.

evil-lynn gave 5 stars to: Wyld Pytch/51 Lex Records Presents

evil-lynn reviewed:
Wyld Pytch/51 Lex Records Presents: Music From Nigeria Various Artists | Format: MP3 Download

I didn't know they could do it like this!, July 12, 2011

This review is from: Wyld Pytch/51 Lex Records Presents: Music From Nigeria (MP3 Download)
All I can say is WoW! I'm a new commer to Nigerian music, and I love the variety of music styles on this album.

Favorite tracks include:
Ekassa 28- reminds me of island caribbean music inspired by 50's jazz in The States.
Do It Like This- A very contemporary song that likens itself to the American Rap genre.
Wahala- For those who are fans of Afrobeat, this song is along the likes of Fela Kuti's sound.
Makojo- This sounds like it might be a continuation of Ekassa.

This album is so good, it has inspired me to find the complete discographies of each artist featured on the album. If this were available for actual purchase, I would gladly part with my cash to own a physical copy. If you'll excuse me, I've got some researching to do.

evil-lynn gave 1 star to: Brain Washing

evil-lynn reviewed:
Brain Washing: Art of Hip-Hopera ~ Jonathan Toth from Hoth

                 Ummmm.....wow, May 25, 2011

        Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Brain Washing: Art of Hip-Hopera (Audio CD)
To be honest, there are no redeeming qualities for this cd. Maybe the artwork is noteworthy, but that's about it. The artwork consists of a guy washing a brain in an old fashioned wash basin and a washboard. This cd is so bad, that I tried to redeem it for store credit at my local music store, and they wouldn't even take it. They didn't even take the time to enter it into their computer to see how much store credit or cash it might have been worth. Unless you are a fan of extremely abstract off beat rap with weird beats, then this might be up your alley. Otherwise don't bother. There are no stand out tracks available on this cd...none whatsoever.

evil-lynn gave 4 stars to: How I Got Over

evil-lynn reviewed:
How I Got Over ~ The Roots

                 Fresh!, July 6, 2010

This review is from: How I Got Over (Audio CD)
The music is soft, and relaxed, but there is nothing but truth being sipt on the mic. To me, that makes the album seem more like a monumental effort. The beats are sophisticated, classy and complex, and to couple that with hearfelt lyrics about very serious things we all worry about is pure gold, imo. I feel like this album is meant to actually make the listener look deep inside themselves, feel what they are talking about (A Piece of Light, Dear God,Walk Alone), make them dance (How I Got Over,Hustla, Radio Daze, Right on, Web 20), and touch their soul all at the same time. I really liked the fact that the album sounded like something from the old school. The recording was a bit gritty, almost like somebody was recording the whole thing on wax, in addition to some of the 80s vocals and sounds used in some of the beats, At times, it felt like a mixture between something 80s-ish, jazzy, and 70s motown era all rolled in one.

The only song I didn't really feel was The Day. It annoys me for reasons I can't understand. But other than that, it's a very solid album, and makes me wonder where will they go next.

I can't help but think that them being a band for a late night comedy show might have something to do with their transformation. I mean, they were good before the new gig, but boy have they changed. They have become more fluid with their music. So far, I think it's a good thing. I'm sure this album will get a lot of people interested in their music but turn away some of the OG roots fans. Was the change all in a matter of time? Who knows.

evil-lynn gave 5 stars to: Race

evil-lynn reviewed:
Race: How Blacks And Whites Think And Feel About The American Obsession by Studs Terkel

A interesting read on so many levels, January 8, 2009

        Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Race: How Blacks And Whites Think And Feel About The American Obsession (Paperback)

I was glued to the book because it was able to give me an understanding of my feelings when it comes to the subject matter in this book. There were times where I struggled to pick it back up and continue reading because of the candor brought out through his interviews. Other times, I could hardly believe what the people were saying, and other times, I was heart broken, and sad. Nevertheless, it was a facinating, thought provoking read. When I finally finished the book, I found myself saying that the book should be required reading in high school, and college curriculum. If you haven't heard of Studs Terkel, then I urge you to find out who he is, and read his books. You'd be cheating yourself if you didn't.

evil-lynn gave 5 stars to: Waterworld

evil-lynn reviewed:
Waterworld ~ Binary Star

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful:

                 Where have I been?!, October 21, 2008

This review is from: Waterworld (Audio CD)
This album was banging from start to finish. I really enjoyed the freestyles that they successfuly blended into the album. They add a gritty, home made, old school, underground cypher feel to them. (See Conquistadors) It remindes me of hanging out in a friends basement with an instrumental tape, dual cassette karoke machine, and 2 mics. I can't believe I was sleeping on them. This album is chock full of delicious beats, samples, scratches, insightful rhymes, and real talk. See "Honest Expressions". They successfuly break down the difference between Hip hop and Hip Pop artists, and how they are just every day guys who rap for the love of it. THIS album is a true to form example of what hip hop really is, and I will recommend this album to anybody who is a new comer to the music genre. It's a shame that this cd is really hard to find, though.

evil-lynn gave 4 stars to: Radio

evil-lynn reviewed:
Radio ~ L.L. LL was 16 years old at the time. Compared to the current young rappers in that age group, not only is his album very complex, but it trumps a lot of the stuff being put out now. This album is a very solid effort, and after listening to what's on the airwaves right now, this album has an effect comparable to when you open up a window to a room with stagnant air. Not only do you feel refreshed, but you regain some of the brain cells that you lost when you turned on todays radio.

All rap fans should do themselves a favor and put this one in their cd players every once in a while. I was searching for political rap artists and this cd came up. The cd was cheap enough, so I decided to take the plunge. The cd starts off deep, but as I listen to it further, the political aspect gets lost in all of the obscure beats. For the most part, the emcees have a decently smooth flow, and can ride the beat pretty well. Some of the songs...well, I guess they try. By the time I get to track 14, I stopped paying attention to the rest of the cd, and I began to zone out. The cd starts to pick up on track 15 In short, there are a few good songs that stood out on the whole cd:
Slumz
Web
America
Shadows
Warrior
Bodybuilding
Overall, the listen was good, but I don't think this will get much replay from me. The good thing is that it gave me some exposure to all of the different emcees I haven't heard of.

evil-lynn gave 4 stars to: The Great Communication

evil-lynn reviewed:
The Great Communication ~ Somobe

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

                 Smooth, October 17, 2007

        Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: The Great Communication (Audio CD)
What do you get when you cross The Roots, and A Tribe Called Quest? Tha answer is Somobe, a hip hop group comprised of 2 dudes from Las Vegas, NV. Their debut album "The Great Communication," consists of jazzy, soulful beats laid by Bob-J, and flows that are as smooth as melted butter courtesy of Jon. It took me a while to do this review because every time I listen to it I hear something new. I had to listen to it for 2 weeks straight, and then took a break for a few days. I picked it up again, only to rediscover it in a new light. There has only been a few hip hop albums that have made me have to listen to them more than once, only to find something new. My favorite songs here are "We need a Love Song",a dedication to hip hop, and how ther aren't many songs dedicated to the love of the art. "Side of the Road," a track where Jon tells a story where he got in a car accident. This story was so vivid, I almost thought he really got in an accident. "Long Days", a very touching song about a child who takes his mind off of his mother's drinking, and his fathers hard work and desperation by using his imaginary friend to comfort him. I saw a little of myself in this song, so I had to listen to this one more than once. "Come Back Mami," a song where he meets a girl on the job, and he tries to get with her. I have to confess that I have a weakness for songs like this especially because Jon comes off as an average guy, and not a big pimp of some sort. I found myself hoping that he got the girl in the end. "Stateline" is another song that you have to play more than once. Not because I didn't understand it, but because I couldn't belive what was going on in the song. Here, he describes some sick crimes that happen on the stateline, and that "that's the way it is."

Like I said before, this review has been a long time coming, but thanks to acts like Somobe, I know that in the world of hip hop, hopefully sooner than later,
a change gone come, and hip hop will finally find its way home.

One Love
