Ioda Sxsw Opening Day Bash Sampler 2012

Celebrating the annual IODA SXSW multimedia event in Austin this is the first free mp3 music sampler of 2012(of many if last year is any guide).

Track 1 You Jane by The Wedding Present. Mildly frantic guitar, band joins in, behind classic indie lone male vocal. Unoriginal lyrics, chorus and story line. Backing vocal and cool active band do not save simple song. You will love it.

A Warm Breeze by Thee Oh Sees. A little more bass a little more thrust on this track. Stomping beat, cool psychedelic era guitar and strident vocal like it although 30 second repetitive fade to end gets old fast.

The Carter Barron by Oddisee. Smooth R'n'B male vocal and busy band on classic sounding 70's style soul song. More complex musical backing than many of this genre. Very nice.

Track 4 is In The Afternoon by Pillow Fight. Light weight female rap vocal over mellow sounds and trick backing track that allows annoying spoken vocal to interject however overall very cool mellow rap song with originality leaking through and entertaining. Like it.

Michoacan by Y la Bamba. Soft vocal opening, song sung in Spanish slightly dramatic lyric over spiny strings and meandering backing, no doubts she can sing as vocal grows and soars within it's old style feel. Annoying but cool. Like it.

Hours by Tycho (Scott Hansen). Dreamy electronic number, bass beat and pretty cool rolling synthesizer sounds maintain interest. Stronger presence than many of this ilk. Nearly 6 minutes of caressing music over constant core. Not an every day song but when the mood strikes a very good song to enjoy while you are staring at the view. Like it.

Travelers by Bright Moments. Jeremy Lyons' New England version of Deltabilly Boys. Very cool washboard feel to much better sound. Horns, vocals, bass and great energy. This is a neat song happy sound makes you wanna get up & do something even if it's only dance. Love it.

Dark Star by Polica. Very cool techno/Industrial (I dunno) opening sound that builds and stretches behind great echo female vocal. Steady busy beat by great band that allows vocal to explore and soar. Song layers more sound onto itself as it progresses, 5 minutes long, I could listen to 10. Very good production. Love this song.

Story Of A Man by Tiago Iorc. Acoustic singer songwriter number by recently successful Brazilian born well traveled s/sw. Guitar, vocal oohhing and simple lyrics, very nice, what's not to like.

Track 10 is Oh Fortune by Dan Mangan. Nice Indie tune that grows from quiet opening to busy band and back. Unexpected drum hits may scare the crap out of you. Nice song.

Hipnódromo by Bam Bam. Perky Spanish language pop song. Pretty cool.

Aim For The Heart by Ruthie Foster. Strong solo female blues vocal over superior musical backing. Song title is the hook, nothing fancy excellent song. Quality production for great song.

Final track is High Life by Daniel Ahearn & The Jones. Literal lyrics that slow and annoy however song is better than the sum of it's parts. Neat package w/catchy chorus active band and cool feel. You will love it.

There is just a mix on here, punk; The Wedding Present, old school R&B; Oddisee, Tex Mex; Y la Bamba, Dance Trance; Tycho, some I can't even label; Bright Moments, Should I lable these artists from a sampler? Not me, for all I know they like to perform all kinds of music just like I like to play all kinds of music. This is a perfect album for a shuffle play, if you don't mind changing moods of music in one setting. Looks like this album is sold out, so I guess all the digital1's and 0's are gone.
