In Calle 13’s neighborhood, the last always finish first!

It has been that way since their debut album, “Calle 13”, shook the Spanish-language urban music genre in 2005. The success of that production was such that it would soon spread far beyond the coast of their homeland, Puerto Rico.
Finding inspiration throughout the Americas in their second album, “Residente o Visitante” (2007), René Pérez Joglar, known as Residente (Resident), and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, or Visitante (Visitor) took their sounds to an international level. Legendary popular music rhythms such as the tango and Colombian cumbia were reinvigorated and electrified when mixed with the echoes of the Caribbean streets. And although the music would change, each album maintained its pungent criticisms, incisive comments and honest opinions. They also kept intact their dark humor, their mastery of popular culture, and the risqué overtones.
And their new album, “Los de atrás vienen conmigo” (Those in the back come with me), to be released October 2008 does not disappoint: the artists once more are creative, picaresque and challenging. And they are accompanied by great names of popular Latin music: Rubén Blades, or the “Latin Bob Dylan”, as Residente calls him; and the group considered by many to be the best rock band in Spanish, Café Tacvba.
The collaboration between Café Tacvba and Calle 13 is evident in the first single, ‘No hay nadie como tú’ (There Is No One Like You), which, again, shatters preconceived notions. In the world, say the members of Calle 13, there are lies and falsehoods, facts, truths, and coincidences. But there is nothing, nothing, one could say, like the compositions that make up this 16-track album, which features an intro, interludes, 12 original songs and a closing.
“Los de atrás vienen conmigo” will be available in a cleaned-up version, although just as irreverent, and also in a very explicit version.
René-Residente’s provocative tongue will earn him critics once more. He, nevertheless, is not intimidated and writes what he feels, whether it has to do with poverty-stricken “barrios”, such as the ones in the song ‘La Perla’, or about the lack of honesty in those Latino young men and women who downplay their ethnic background in ‘Gringo Latin Funk’. Even the reggaetón world, in which more than once Calle 13 have been placed – erroneously – also gets a tongue-lashing from the duo because of the hypocrisy Residente and Visitante find dominates the genre.
“When we begin to work on a song, it’s because we are going to use it,” states Residente. “Each song has a direction, like a movie does. We never eliminate a track. What I tell everyone is that, this is not like a candy factory, where we make 25 yellow ones and then remove two.”
The creative process of “Los de atrás vienen conmigo” also focuses on new musical influences that proved irresistible to these collaborators. Rhythms from diverse corners of the world make an unexpected appearance within the urban universe of Calle 13.
“There’s something really cool about this album, and that is that with it, we export and import music,” says Residente. “We grab music from around the world and take it all over to Latin America and to Puerto Rico. And the music from Puerto Rico, we take to Europe and to the rest of the world.”
The message is clear: the Calle 13 group continues its evolution, and its revolution.
“This album signals another point of view. It is the beginning of what Calle 13 is going to be in the future,” explains Visitante. “We took elements from other places, such as the music from the Balkan region and the candombe in Uruguay, which has the ‘clave’ (beat) and a sort of sambaesque influence. It is an afro-rhythm that encompasses all Latin America.”
Calle 13 have met Latin America and more throughout their short careers, in which Residente and Visitante have won five Latin GRAMMY awards, something they never imagined while growing up in a neighborhood in the area of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. There, Eduardo would visit his close friend, who lived on 13th Street, and he would identify himself as Visitante so that he would be given access at the front gate. René, meanwhile, would identify himself as Residente.
Eduardo, originally from the Santurce sector in San Juan, “visited” music from an early age. At six, he was taught music through the Suzuki method, and afterwards took piano lessons with José Acevedo, a renowned teacher from the island. Eduardo continued his studies at the Conservatorio de Música and at Escuela Manolo Acosta, where he learned to play the saxophone and the flute. He taught himself classic guitar, and found in the computer new ways of rhythmic expression. Although he studied accounting and information systems at the University of Puerto Rico, his real passion was production and music composition.
René, from Hato Rey, also “resided” in the arts while very young. As the son of an actress, Flor Joglar, he immersed himself in literature. He studied for five years at Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico, and for three more he studied animation at Georgia’s Savannah College of Art and Design. Besides writing music, he shot videos and got involved in other aspects of the arts.
His goal for Calle 13 today?
“I would like to communicate with more people around the world, no matter the language,” says René. “I don’t know how, but I know that we are going to make that come true.”

En el vecindario de Calle 13, los últimos siempre son los primeros.
Así ha sido desde que su álbum de estreno, “Calle 13”, sacudiera al género de la música urbana en el 2005. El éxito de esa producción sería tal, que pronto el reconocimiento se desbordaría más allá de las costas nativas de este dúo de hermanos oriundos de la isla de Puerto Rico: René Pérez Joglar, el Residente, y Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, el Visitante.
Trasplantados a las Américas con su segundo disco, “Residente o Visitante” (2007), se internacionalizó el sonido. Legendarios ritmos populares como el tango y la cumbia colombiana se vieron revigorizados y electrizados al mezclarse con el eco de las calles caribeñas. Pero, aunque variara la música de las canciones, en cada disco la crítica mordaz, el comentario incisivo y la opinión franca fueron constantes. Igual su particular humor negro, el dominio de la cultura popular y una picardía que amenazaba con incomodar en cualquier momento.
En su nueva producción discográfica, “Los de atrás vienen conmigo”, pautado su lanzamiento para octubre del 2008, Calle 13 no decepciona: los artistas plantan una vez más la bandera de la creatividad, del atrevimiento y del desafío como tan sólo ellos saben hacer. Y se acompañan de grandes figuras de la música popular latina: Rubén Blades, o el “Bob Dylan latino”, como lo llama Residente; y el que muchos consideran es el grupo de rock supremo en español, Café Tacvba.
La colaboración entre Café Tacvba y Calle 13 se manifiesta en un primer sencillo, ‘No hay nadie como tú’, que de nuevo quebranta preconcepciones. En el mundo, dice Calle 13, hay mentiras y falsedades, hechos, verdades y casualidades. Pero nada, nada hay, podría decirse, como las composiciones de este disco de 16 cortes, que incluyen introducción, interludios, 12 temas originales y conclusión.
“Los de atrás vienen conmigo” entonces no dará tregua: estará disponible en una versión apta para todo público, pero no por ello menos irreverente, y una versión explícita.
La lengua provocadora de René-Residente volverá a ganarle críticos. Él, sin embargo, no se amedrenta y escribe lo que siente, ya sea sobre barrios marginales, como en el tema ‘La Perla’, o sobre la falta de honestidad en aquellos jóvenes que reniegan de su latinidad en ‘Gringo Latin Funk’. Incluso el mundo del reggaetón, en el que más de una vez se ha ubicado – erróneamente – a Calle 13, también es fustigado por el dúo ante la hipocresía que Residente y Visitante consideran predomina en el género.
“Cuando empezamos a trabajar una composición, es porque va a ir”, afirma Residente. “Cada tema tiene una dirección. Es como una película. Nunca eliminamos temas. Lo que le digo a todo el mundo es que, esto no es como una fábrica de bombones, en la que hicimos 25 amarillos y quitamos dos”.
El proceso creativo de “Los de atrás vienen conmigo” desembocó en nuevas influencias musicales que atraían a esta pareja de colaboradores. Ritmos de diversos rincones del mundo aparecen de manera insospechada dentro del universo urbano de Calle 13.
“Hay algo bien chévere en este disco, y es que exportamos e importamos música”, considera Residente. “Agarramos música del mundo y la regamos por Latinoamérica y por Puerto Rico. Y la música de Puerto Rico, la llevamos a Europa y al resto del mundo”.
Llevan un mensaje claro: que Calle 13 sigue evolucionando y revolucionando.
“Este disco marca otro punto de vista. Es el principio de lo que va a ser Calle 13 en el futuro”, analiza Visitante. “Se tomaron elementos de otros lugares, como la música de la región de los Balcanes y el candombe en Uruguay, que tiene la clave y una influencia medio samba. Es un ritmo afro que abarca a toda Latinoamérica”.
Latinoamérica y mucho más ha abarcado Calle 13 durante su corta trayectoria, en la cual sus integrantes se han llevado cinco premios Latin GRAMMY. Algo que nunca imaginaron cuando crecían en una urbanización del área de Trujillo Alto en Puerto Rico. Ahí, Eduardo visitaba a su hermano de crianza René en la Calle 13, y se identificaba como Visitante para tener acceso de entrada. René, por su parte, se identificaba como Residente.
Eduardo, oriundo de Santurce, visitó la música desde temprana edad. A los seis años, se educó en el método de aprendizaje musical Suzuki, y luego tomó clases de piano con José Acevedo, reconocido maestro en su tierra. Continuó estudios en el Conservatorio de Música y en la Escuela Manolo Acosta, donde aprendió a tocar saxofón y flauta. Se enseñó a sí mismo la guitarra clásica, y encontró en la computadora nuevas vías de expresión rítmica. Aunque cursó bachillerato en contabilidad y sistemas de información en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, su verdadera pasión la ejerció a través de la producción y composición de música.
René, natural de Hato Rey, también residió desde pequeño en las artes ya que, como hijo de actriz, Flor Joglar, se adentró en la literatura. Estudió cinco años en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico, y tres más de animación en el reconocido Savannah College of Art and Design, en Georgia. Además de componer, hizo videos y se involucró en distintas facetas de las artes plásticas.
¿Su meta para Calle 13 hoy?
“Me gustaría comunicarme con más gente del mundo, sin importar idiomas”, reflexiona René. “No sé cómo, pero sé que lo vamos a lograr”.
